Top Ten Christmas Tips for Happy Help in the Home

In the bustle of Christmas and hangovers of New Year don't forget those who have worked in your home to get you through the year. Here are some ideas to thank them for this year's efforts and to help build a strong working relationship into the next year.

Thank Your Nanny or Au Pair at Christmas by:

1. Remembing a simple thank you; they can tend to be forgotten in the commotion of Christmas.

2. Telling her what it is that she does so well: people always like to know why they are appreciated - and they are likely to keep doing it.

3. Dipping into your pocket: a Christmas bonus will ensure goodwill into the following year.

4. Doing something for her: it can cost nothing, but mean a lot - from just a cup of tea, to an uplifting note or something to make her work or home life easier.

5. Buying a thoughtful Christmas present: really put your thinking cap on and get them something they will appreciate. Another bottle of bubble bath can be so disappointing.

6. Finding out what she is looking forward to next year: take time out to chat about other things than the children and her job; you may be surprised by what you hear.

7. Asking her what one thing she would change about her job: if it is realistic, try to make it happen.

8. Sending her home early: it will put a spring in her step and a smile on her face.

9. Doing or buying something to make the job easier: it isn't glamorous but your nanny or au pair may be delighted if you buy a new iron - just make sure it isn't her only Christmas present from you.

10.Making a New Year's Resolution for each other; tell her something that you will do for her and ask her to do the same for you; it makes you think about each other’s stress points and helps to build your relationship.
