Nanny Job Description

A clear nanny job description should be the central part of both your search for a nanny and also when managing a nanny. The first thing I would recommend you do in your search is to write a clear nanny job description.

A Great Nanny Job Description Will:

  • Help you define exactly what you want your nanny to do for you
  • Help you write your advertisement or agency brief
  • Put the word out amongst your friends
  • Enable you to sift through CVs and create your shortlist
  • Show potential candidates what you expect them to do as part of the job
  • Guide your interview questions
  • Help you decide who will get the job
  • Help you manage your nanny as she knows what is expected of her from the start

Your nanny job description can be as long or short as you like, whatever you feel suits you and the job you would like done. You can always expand on it before your new nanny arrives but it is good to write the basics down now.

A Nanny Job Description could Consist of:

  • The names and ages of your children and the basic care they need
  • Details of cooking, the need for healthy meals and if any food shopping is involved
  • Details of washing and tidying needed and in which rooms
  • Details of school or nursery runs and activities or groups the children need to be taken to
  • Details of which games, activities or learning you would like the children to do at home
  • Details of any additional baby sitting or weekend work that is required
  • Whether there is a need for flexibility in her working hours and if so what this will entail
  • Whether you will require your nanny to come on holiday with you
  • Details of any pet care or additional household chores you would like done (particularly if looking for a nanny housekeeper!)
  • How you would like to work with your nanny

Once created you can change your nanny job description over time, but it should always be the central core of what you expect your nanny to do when looking after your children.

If you have had a previous bad experience with a nanny or au pair you may like to write a long and detailed job description. This will give you the peace of mind that your new nanny will know exactly what to expect when she starts her job.
